Oh How I Love ME – Let Me Count The Ways Why you should put yourself first

How many of us are busting our humps every day trying to build a career, make a living and provide for our families or to take care of our families? If you think about it, even someone who owns a pet has responsibilities… We all have that something that requires our attention, efforts and energy, and takes up a substantial part of our minds!

This pretty much means that at any given point something comes up and pulls us away from what we were doing for ourselves and we eventually start to postpone the gym, that trip we’ve been meaning to take, that dance class we’ve been wanting to join, the massage session at 6 this evening… whatever shape or form this postponement takes, it has the same impact: it is a form of self-neglect… Surely, I am not referring to the occasional moments… we’re talking chronic here!

I’ve seen people so dedicated to their careers they have never even set foot in a gym! They chain smoke, eat unhealthy fast foods to get them through the day, spend their entire time cleaning the house, cooking, doing laundry and dropping their kids off for their daily activities without realizing at any point that they have literally put their life on hold to successfully measure up to their responsibilities.

I’m not generalizing here, God knows there are people out there who are disciplined enough not to let anything pull them away from their acquired routine… But for the few whose priorities do not include themselves – I being one of them – you’re eventually going to run short on steam and it’s high time you realized that you can accomplish so much more if you prioritize yourself before anything else. Even though Mother Theresa praises altruism, it doesn’t mean you need to put yourself in the boot and here are a few reasons not to…

Increased productivity
You would be amazed as to how much more you can get done when your inner self is satisfied and motivated.

Boost in Energy Levels
The minute your energy level goes down it affects your direct environment, the people you work with and your family. My son is so sensitive to energy that he becomes defiant and confrontational mostly when I’m at my lowest – almost as though he is trying to pull me out of it!

Positive Outlook
Somehow everything becomes easier to deal with when you are in balance, you look at problems and challenges differently and move into damage containment quicker. You can’t expect yourself to be able to maintain a positive atmosphere at home or at work unless you are in a good place.

Mental health equals physical health
Our bodies are the custodians of our mood and wellbeing… when take care of our bodies be it in the form of nutrition or physical exercise, it gives us longevity and comfort so we can get on with spiritual growth…

Whether it’s a holiday at a sandy beach, a mountain climb, learning to play the guitar, 10 minutes of meditation every morning, one hour of exercise everyday, just do it, your “self” will love you for it!
